eBay combined postage for dropshippers — when multi-item orders clash with supplier parcels
Combined postage (combined shipping on US Help) is eBay’s way of charging less—or invoicing once—when a buyer takes more than one of your items. The feature assumes those items can travel in one package. Dropshippers get hurt when a multi-item cart looks like a warehouse pick-and-pack while AliExpress, Amazon or Walmart fulfilment still leaves as two (or more) parcels from different nodes.
This Trust-safe guide is general seller-ops information for fixed-price dropship listings. It covers when to offer vs decline a combine, how to stay honest in Messages, and how to keep fee and postage maths realistic. It is not legal, tax or account-safety advice, it does not publish carrier rate cards, and it does not invent conversion lifts, packing-time savings or “safe combine” percentages. Help text, Postage Preferences labels, combined-invoice flows and eligibility lists change by site and date—always re-read live Help for your marketplace (UK, US and others differ) and check Seller Hub / Postage Preferences yourself.
Throughout: draft ≠ publish. Listing tools can speed draft fill; you still decide whether a postage policy carries combine discounts, whether two SKUs can share a parcel, and what you tell the buyer after the sale.
Sibling depth: postage options · international shipping · business policies · buyer messaging · handling time.

What combined postage is (and what dropshippers often misunderstand)
From seller Help themes (confirm live on Offering combined postage and Postage discounts):
| Mechanism | What it usually does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Allow combined payments and postage (Postage Preferences) | Lets you combine unpaid purchases into one invoice within a time window you choose | Force two supplier warehouses into one box |
| Combined postage / shipping discount rules | Once applied to listings (or a postage business policy), can auto-adjust postage at checkout when a buyer takes multiple eligible items | Apply themselves—Help is explicit that rules must be attached |
| “Request total from seller” (basket) | Buyer asks you to invoice a combined total before they have already used a postage discount | Rewrite eligibility (Best Offer purchases and other Help-listed exceptions stay exceptions) |
| Combined invoice (Seller Hub / My eBay Orders) | You pick the items, enter the new postage charge, send invoice | Invent a one-parcel cost when two parcels will still leave |
| Partial refund after payment (Help: business sellers) | If the buyer already paid postage, you can still offer a combine discount by refunding the extra | Create a physical combine that the supplier cannot perform |
| One label / one tracking for a combined order | After payment, create a label from one order and upload that tracking for the items in the new combined order (Help theme) | Let you upload one number when two carriers actually moved two boxes |
Eligibility reminders from UK Help (confirm live; US wording may differ): Help lists situations where orders still post separately even if you set up combined postage—examples on the live article include Click & Collect, most Authenticity Guarantee items (with a narrow same-item fashion/trainers exception), and items purchased with Best Offer. Simple Delivery combine behaviour is a private-seller / UK theme; most dropship catalogues are business listings with custom postage—do not copy private-seller prepaid-label habits onto a China-direct SKU.
Practical dropshipper reading:
- Combined postage is a fulfilment promise, not a merchandising badge.
- Auto-discounts at checkout are dangerous if your catalogue mixes suppliers. The buyer already paid the discounted postage; you still fund each supplier lane.
- Fees often still sit on the total amount of the sale (item + postage + applicable taxes as Help defines)—so postage you keep, discount or refund still belongs on a worksheet. Detail: fees (UK/US) · profit pricing.
Why multi-item eBay carts clash with dropship suppliers
eBay’s combine tools were built for sellers who can pack SKU A and SKU B into one outgoing parcel. Dropshipping breaks that assumption whenever fulfilment nodes differ.
| Cart pattern | What the buyer reasonably expects | What often happens on the supplier side |
|---|---|---|
| Two SKUs, same wholesale supplier, same warehouse, supplier does combine | One parcel, one tracking, postage closer to “first item + add-on” | Possible—only after you have tested that store’s combine fee vs your eBay rule |
| Two SKUs, same marketplace brand (both “AliExpress”) but different stores / warehouses | One parcel because both listings look like yours | Two outbound parcels, two postage bills, two tracking numbers |
| AliExpress + Amazon, or Amazon + Walmart, mixed on one eBay account | Combined invoice because they bought from you | Physically separate networks; combining is not a Message away |
| Same SKU family, different item locations on the listings | Combined domestic-looking postage | Location honesty and EDD already conflict; a combine discount makes it worse |
| Two international destinations / two origins | One customs story | Two export legs, two import-charge paths—see international shipping |
Trust-safe rule: do not advertise or auto-apply combined postage unless you can name one fulfilment node that will actually put both items in one trackable package you will upload on time.
Lot vs multi-quantity listings (one SKU, many units) are a different problem from combining different listings. Pack-count honesty lives in lots and multi-quantity; this article is about two (or more) paid lines from the same buyer.
Offer vs decline combine — decide before the discount is live
International reach is optional. Combined postage is optional too. The expensive pattern is attaching a generous rule to every postage policy “for conversion,” then discovering the supplier cannot merge the cart.
When offering a combine can fit
Offer (or attach a combine rule) only when all of the following are true—or stay conservative and skip the rule:
- Same ship-from reality. Item location, Country of Origin / region fields (where used) and supplier warehouse match closely enough that one parcel is truthful.
- The supplier (or your compliant fulfilment path) will actually combine those SKUs in one package, with a trackable number you can map on eBay. Test it on a private order before you promise it to buyers.
- Services match. Help: if you use postage rules rather than a postage business policy, selected postage services need to match for discounts to apply. Policies apply the match automatically.
- You have run the money the other way. Combined charge to the buyer vs sum of supplier postages vs eBay fees on the postage portion—on a worksheet, not a forum guess (break-even worksheet).
- Handling still holds for the slowest SKU. Combining does not shrink the worst-case days to a carrier scan (handling time).
- Help eligibility. Skip Best Offer lines, Click & Collect, Authenticity Guarantee edges and any other live exceptions—do not argue them in Messages.
A named postage business policy such as UK — same-warehouse combine OK (your wording) attached only to that supplier family is cleaner than one global “£1 each extra item” rule on mixed inventory. How to attach rules: business policies · live Postage discounts.
When to decline (or never attach the rule)
Decline the combine—and keep combine discounts off those listings—when:
| Situation | Why decline |
|---|---|
| Different suppliers / warehouses / marketplaces | Two real parcels; a one-parcel discount is a gift of your margin |
| You have never seen that supplier merge two SKUs | Guessing packed weight for calculated combine is how you undercharge |
| International mix, or two origins | Customs, EDD and INR risk stack; exclusions belong in postage tools, not a cheerful combine (international) |
| One SKU is slow-handling, the other is not | Combined tracking and one EDD story will miss the slower clock |
| Best Offer / other Help-ineligible types | Help already says these may post separately |
| Buyer already used an auto postage discount | UK Help: “Request total from seller” is for buyers who have not already benefited from a postage discount—do not stack theatre on top |
| You would need a prohibited retail buy-and-ship hop to “make it one box” | Fulfilment model problem, not a postage-rule problem (CLM-017 below) |
Declining is not rude. Promising a combine you cannot perform is how you eat two supplier postages, upload mismatched tracking, and invite Item not received pressure (add tracking · INR).
After they have already paid two lots of postage
UK Help: business sellers can still offer a combined-postage discount via a partial refund from Seller Hub / My eBay Orders. Use that path only when you will send one parcel and the refund matches a real saving—not as a “please don’t leave negative feedback” coupon while two boxes still leave Asia.
If you cannot combine after payment: do not invent a refund you cannot fund, and do not cancel as a shortcut (unexpected seller cancellations are a Seller Standards defect theme). Ship as two orders, upload two trackings, and explain in Messages. Partial-refund playbook for returns is a different tool: partial refunds.
Messages honesty (combine requests)
Buyer Messages are the audit trail. Stay on-platform; do not move the combine conversation to WhatsApp or personal email (member-to-member contact). Full reply habits: buyer messaging.
Facts to have open before you type: listing item locations, handling windows, postage services the buyer selected, whether a combine rule is actually attached, supplier warehouse notes, and whether the buyer has already paid.
Safe pattern — you can combine (adapt; do not copy blindly)
Thanks for your message. These two items can go in one parcel from the same fulfilment point. I’ll send a combined invoice with one postage charge that covers that single shipment. Tracking will be uploaded to the combined order once the carrier scans it. The handling window on the listings still applies.
What this pattern does not do: invent “free combine on everything,” shrink handling, or promise a domestic courier when location is overseas.
Safe pattern — you cannot combine
Thanks for asking. These items ship from different fulfilment points, so they will travel as two separate parcels with two tracking numbers. eBay’s combined-postage discount is meant for items that go in one package; I can’t honestly apply that here. Each order will follow the postage and handling already shown on the listing. I’ll upload tracking on both as soon as the carriers scan them.
Do not:
- Say “already combined” and then send two numbers.
- Quietly keep both postage amounts and tell them it is one parcel.
- Promise a new “guaranteed by Friday” date that is tighter than EDD (EDD Help).
- Ask them to pay the difference off-eBay.
- Ignore the Message until they open a case (Seller Standards).
If an auto-discount already applied and you cannot physically combine
Be factual: the checkout discount assumed one package; your supplier cannot merge. You then choose in private whether you absorb two supplier postages (margin hit you already agreed to by attaching the rule) or, where Help allows and the facts support it, resolve the order—not by blaming the buyer. The fix is off the listing family for future drafts: remove the combine rule from mixed-supplier postage policies.
Fee and postage realism (no invented rates)
We do not reprint Royal Mail / USPS / UPS / FedEx grids or claim “combining always saves X%.” Run your numbers in Seller Hub’s live tools and on a private worksheet.
Structure of the worksheet (fill with your live quotes; this is a map, not a rate card):
- Supplier postage A (that SKU, that destination, that service).
- Supplier postage B (same).
- Buyer postage if two separate eBay lines (what each listing already charges).
- Buyer postage if you honour a combine (invoice amount or auto-rule result).
- eBay selling / final-value-style fees on the total sale as Help defines it for your site—including postage where Help says so (fees). Confirm whether a later postage refund receives a fee adjustment on the live fee/credit pages—do not assume.
- Buffer for a second box, a failed combine, or a return on only one SKU (returns).
Hypothetical illustration only (not typical, not a target, not a quote): suppose SKU A’s real supplier postage is 8, SKU B’s is 9, and an auto-rule charges the buyer 8 + 2. You still pay 8 + 9 outbound. The gap (plus fees on whatever postage remains) is your cost of attaching that rule. If the supplier does merge and charges 10 total, the same rule can still clear. The lesson is the gap, not the invented digits—re-run with live figures.
Postage-charge honesty (Selling practices / Shipping policy themes): do not use postage as a junk fee on the first item to “make it up on combine,” and do not advertise a combine discount you will not honour. Flat vs calculated vs free still follows postage options—a combine rule on top of a guessed flat is two guesses.
Promotional vs flat add/subtract rules (Help): promotional conditions (e.g. “no more than [amount] postage if they buy more than one,” or free postage over a spend threshold) override flat/calculated combine rules on listings that carry a combined-postage discount—confirm live Postage discounts. Dropshippers should treat promotional “max postage / free over spend” as a catalogue-wide promise. If half the catalogue cannot share a box, do not turn that promotional rule on.
How to set this up without painting the whole catalogue
Exact menu labels move; the pattern is stable.
- Postage Preferences → enable Allow combined payments and postage and choose a combine-payment window only if you will actually invoice combines. A long window on mixed dropship stock invites baskets you cannot merge.
- Create combined postage rules only with amounts you have tested against same-warehouse SKUs—no forum add-on fees.
- Attach those rules through a dedicated postage business policy, not as a default on every draft (business policies). Help: Business policies → edit the postage policy → Combined postage discounts → Save.
- Keep a second postage policy without combine discounts for mixed-source / international-heavy / slow-handling SKUs.
- On the listing (or Chrome draft), confirm which policy is attached before List. Rules do nothing until applied.
- Spot-check a multi-item basket preview on your site if the UI offers it—do not assume the buyer sees what you meant.
International SKUs: offer vs exclude lanes first (international shipping); only then consider combine within a lane you already operate.
After the sale: one parcel vs two (tracking and handling)
Shipping policy themes still apply: post within stated handling; honour the service the buyer selected; upload accurate tracking that matches the delivery address.
- True combine: one package → one carrier scan → Help’s “create a label from one of the orders and upload that tracking number for all of the items in the new combined order” path (confirm live id=4169 and labels Help). Do not mark dispatched when you have only placed the supplier order.
- Cannot combine: two supplier orders, two numbers, two uploads. Tell the buyer which number belongs to which SKU. Quiet tracking on China-direct legs is a Messages facts problem, not a reason to claim one box (add tracking).
- Handling clock starts at payment on each line until a carrier scan—combining unpaid invoices does not pause EDD (handling time).
- If the supplier slips on only one SKU, resolve that line under Help (refund / INR / cancel-reason honesty)—do not hold the whole cart hostage in a “waiting to combine” story.
CLM-017 light: sourcing page ≠ one magic warehouse
Importing listing data from AliExpress, Amazon or Walmart is not permission to run every fulfilment model those marketplaces enable, and it is not a combine licence. eBay’s dropshipping Help (UK) / US drop shipping distinguishes allowed wholesale-style fulfilment (you remain responsible for delivery and buyer satisfaction) from models Help does not allow—commonly framed as buying from another retailer or marketplace after the eBay sale for direct ship to the buyer. Confirm the live page for your site. We do not market prohibited retail buy-and-ship as “the way to combine two carts into one box.”
Draft ≠ publish: combined-postage checklist before List
Treat combine rules as part of draft review, same as price, location and VeRO flags. Whether you fill the draft manually or with a non-API / session-based Chrome workflow, you still approve publish.
Before List:
- Item location is honest for how this SKU ships.
- Postage policy attached is the one that matches this supplier family—not a leftover default with a promotional combine.
- Combined postage discounts are on only if a same-warehouse combine has been tested.
- Domestic / international reach still matches lanes you operate (postage · international).
- Handling / dispatch matches a bad-week hand-off for this SKU, not the fastest sibling in the cart (handling).
- Worksheet includes supplier postage as if the buyer also bought a second SKU—so you know the worst combine case.
- Description does not promise “always combined / always one parcel / always free extra postage.”
- Quantity is conservative (out of stock).
- Brand / VeRO check cleared (VeRO).
- Only then publish—draft ≠ published listing until you hit List. Wider gate: draft vs publish checklist.
How DS Lister Pro fits (draft prep only)
DS Lister Pro (Alpine Adverts LLC) is a Chrome extension that prepares editable eBay drafts from AliExpress, Amazon and Walmart pages—with fee-aware estimates, brand/VeRO-style flags and review-before-publish control. It does not enable combined postage for you, merge supplier orders, auto-invoice buyers, invent a local warehouse, or replace Seller Hub Postage Preferences / business policies.
- Soft path: install · Chrome Web Store · select plan (paid trial, not free—confirm live terms)
- Tool context: best AliExpress → eBay Chrome extensions · deeper install notes: install DS Lister Pro
DS Lister Pro is not affiliated with eBay Inc., AliExpress, Amazon or Walmart. Listing data from a retail or marketplace page ≠ permission to use prohibited retail fulfilment—you stay responsible for eBay-compliant sourcing (CLM-017).
FAQ
Should dropshippers offer combined postage?
Only on SKUs that actually share one parcel. For mixed-supplier catalogues the safer default is no auto-combine rule, then a manual combined invoice only when you have verified the warehouse merge. Confirm live options in Offering combined postage (UK) / US combined shipping Help.
A buyer asked me to combine two different suppliers. Can I just refund some postage?
A partial refund (Help: business sellers, after payment) is a discount on postage they already paid, not a merge of two networks. Refund only if you will send one package or you are making an explicit goodwill choice you can fund. Otherwise ship two parcels, upload two trackings, and say so in Messages.
Can I put “combined shipping available” in every description?
Not if it is not true for every pair of SKUs. Blanket promises become Selling practices / expectation problems when the second item leaves another country. Prefer policy-level rules on the listings that qualify—and silence on the ones that do not.
Do eBay fees fall if I combine postage?
Often selling fees follow the total amount of the sale including postage as Help defines it for your site. A lower postage charge can change that total; a later refund may or may not adjust fees—verify live. We do not reprint rate cards. Fees explainer.
The buyer used Best Offer. Can we still combine?
UK Help lists items purchased with Best Offer among examples that aren’t eligible for combined postage (confirm live; other exceptions include Click & Collect and most Authenticity Guarantee items). Do not override Help in Messages.
Does a Chrome lister change my combine obligations?
No. Connection method only changes how the draft is filled. Combined postage rules, invoices, tracking, dropshipping policy and Seller Standards stay yours. Non-API explainer.
Does DS Lister Pro offer a free trial?
No. DS Lister Pro uses a paid trial model—not a free trial. Confirm live terms on select plan.
